Summer Jewellery Care

The sun has well and truly made its appearance, which means our skin is getting burnt and the beaches are getting busier! While you might have a million tips and tricks to help you stay cool in this heat, people often forget that summer can take a toll on our jewellery in a number of ways. Follow along for some interesting tips to take care of your pieces during this sweaty season.

Water Care

The best way to care for your jewellery when you take it swimming is DON’T. It might be a hassle taking off all your jewellery pieces before diving into the water, but chlorine and salt water can tarnish and damage your jewellery! It’s important to remember to slip off your jewellery before having a dip. It also saves your pieces falling off in the water and getting lost. Don’t pull a Kim Kardashian in Bora Bora!

Slip Slop Slap

The first rule of sun safety is sunscreen! Even though it can seriously protect your skin, it has the opposite affect on your jewellery. Not only does it make your pieces greasy, but sunscreen can build up over time, making your metal and stone look dull. While sunscreen ruins the aesthetics of your jewellery, it also attracts abrasive materials that can cause some serious damage. So best to take off your jewellery in sunscreen related activities!

Work up a Sweat

While your smart watch is the perfect accessory for your summer workouts, your beloved jewellery pieces might not be! Like sunscreen, sweat can create a build up on your pieces and dull their sparkle, it can also tarnish your jewellery and ruin any plated pieces. Taking off your jewellery to exercise also reduces the risk of friction, which can scratch and damage your pieces further!

Squeaky Clean

Having your pieces cleaned makes sure that there isn’t any sweat and sunscreen build up, and ensures that your pieces are shining their best. You can take your pieces in to get professionally cleaned, or you can use a soft cloth and a mild soapy solution to help break down the build-up. This also limits the risk of abrasive materials sticking to your pieces.

Now you might be thinking “when am I even allowed to wear my jewellery this summer?” While these tips might have you thinking you can’t wear your beloved pieces anywhere this summer, there are still plenty of options for you to shine!
