Whenever someone thinks of ‘vintage’ they often imagine a time where TVs were rare, and microwaving your leftovers was a dream. It’s a bit jarring to discover that ‘vintage’ is now anywhere from 2004 and older. Maybe flip phones and boxy computers don’t feel like they belong in a museum yet, but the new wave of vintage fashion (pioneered by social media), has made it jarringly obvious that the noughties are now nostalgic. Speaking of nostalgia, the early 2000’s brought about some interesting jewellery trends and considering that Penfold’s specialises in all things vintage and antique, we would love to revisit some of our favourite Y2K jewellery trends. Now is the time to dust off your old low-rise jeans, put on some Britney Spears, and take a trip to the past!
Bright, Beautiful, and Bold
The best part of the early 2000’s was that minimalism was rare. Colour, big shapes, and bold designs were worn frequently. Personality could be shown through fashion choices, and people had fun with mixing and matching patterns, colours, and designs. Minimalist jewellery has stocked the shelves of shops for a while now, and while sleek, simple designs are stunning, we are infinitely excited to see bright coloured gems taking centre stage once more. The best part of this bright resurgence is that you can make this your own! Incorporate your favourite colours and designs into your jewellery, mix and match hues to create something unique. A colour comeback means that you can have limitless fun with your creativity.
Charming to Meet You
One pendant or charm is beautiful… but what about having multiple? A popular trend in the early noughties was charm bracelets and necklaces. What’s not to love about having multiple pretty pendants? The beauty of charm jewellery is that you can make it as simple, or as eclectic, as you want. You can choose to follow a theme, or you can just add anything your heart desires. Why not start a charm bracelet or necklace to add a more personal touch to your jewellery box?
Fly Away Butterfly
Butterflied flew their way into the jewellery scene in a big way in the early 2000’s, with cute little butterfly clips, to bold butterfly earrings and chokers. Now in the 2020’s, they’ve emerged from their cocoons ready to take on the jewellery scene again. The resurgence of butterflies has seen dainty butterfly pieces becoming more and more popular. This trend is a much more minimalist way to pay homage to the newest vintage era.
All Choked Up
The choker. This piece has a love-hate relationship with anyone that went through 2000’s fashion the first time around, and of course with noughties fashion making a comeback, the choker had to reappear too. But gone are the days of thick black pieces of fabric tied tight around the neck. 2020’s chokers are much more simplistic. Small, dainty chains fashioned as chokers are much more popular now, some unadorned, and some with charms and pendants galore. This choker resurgence has really highlighted the modern spin we’re putting on our Y2K favourites.
